The end of mobile ‘not-spots’?
UK mobile networks urged to allow national roaming.
UK’s mobile operators are failing to meet coverage targets set in 2014 and as a result are urged to allow national roaming. According to the recent report produced by the British Infrastructure Group (BIG), around 17 million of people are unable to use their mobiles at home due to having ‘poor or no reception’. The issue of ‘not-spots’ appears to be very widespread, the report identified 525 locations around the country with no mobile coverage.
Yet, overseas visitors to the UK have better coverage roaming than local people. This is because foreign SIMs with roaming equipped are not restricted to one network, instead they allow roaming across national networks.
The British Infrastructure Group BIG see national roaming as the best solution to eliminate the ‘not-spots’ problem.
Group chairman Grant Shapps commented: “It is unacceptable that areas in Britain continue to have such poor mobile connectivity, and that overseas visitors can expect better mobile coverage than Britons stuck with a single provider”.
“The time for excuses from the mobile sector is over. The government must make a better call for Britain and bring national mobile coverage policy into the 21st Century.”
While the deadline for mobile operators to tackle the ‘not-spots’ problem isn’t until the end of next year, BIG says that it’s “highly unlikely” this goal will be met.
“There is much left to be done by the mobile communications sector to improve mobile infrastructure and increase the extent of coverage in the UK. (…) The reference to an increase in mobile data coverage as an ‘ancillary benefit’ of this investment agreement rescinds the responsibility of mobile operators for actually making a tangible improvement to mobile coverage across the country.”
However, UK’s mobile operators are resistant. Mobile UK, the trade association for the UK’s mobile network operator, told the BBC that national roaming can de-incentivize all providers to continue making infrastructure investments.
